Actualizing italian tradition of urbanity and centrality values in the town-hall square: that was the target of the competition organized by Cernusco sul Naviglio municipality 1996, won by Studio Redaelli Speranza with landscape designer Sophie Ambroise, and built in 2001-2002. The project shows how urban design isn't a matter of phisical dimensions: the renewal of a single public space can be very important in the urban scale. Car parking dislocation gives this place back to pedestrians, thanks to a contemporary language. The project actualize the history of the site, that in the 19th century was villa Greppi's italian garden, today the town hall, and reorganizes the adjoining school's access system. The result is a contemporary public space, a pedestrian area inside a restricted to traffic zone, a multipurposal place for varous activities. Two big areas with different identity characterize the new square: the new villa Greppi's garden, a green parterre raised above the square, with arboreal elements drawing the walk-space, made more precious by Armand's Tuba Mirum sculpture; and the square in the strict sense of the word, given back to citizen's use and to collective functions, characterized by white paving stones; at last, external boundaries reseved to cars. location architects client design team design phase construction phase photos published in | |
